There are no bells and whistles or frills and fancies in the new Fall/Winter collection by Justin Alexander Sweetheart for 2018. Instead of treading the same path as many other bridal brands for this season, the influential designer has taken a step back from embroidery, embellishment and exaggerated features to bring a collection that is rooted in simple and traditional bridalwear. This is not to say, however, that the signature innovative style of the Sweetheart range is absent for this season – looks and cuts that some claim had their heyday years ago are brought back with subtle modern twists, making them perfect for the 21st century woman.
The Justin Alexander Sweetheart range is almost exclusively described in the wedding world as “flirty and fun”, and admittedly, these descriptions are true – indeed, the first gown in this collection, 11000FF, is a youthful piece that ends above the knee, and features an alternative tulle overlay skirt. However, it would be remiss of us to ignore the essential romance that defines this collection as well. The vast number of sweetheart necklines, and long, flowing skirts really contribute to this theme, as does the floral brocade and inclusion of Swarovski crystals.
One of the best features of this collection is that, due to the relative simplicity of the gowns on show, brides have the chance to accessorise their wedding look. Any woman who chooses a dress from this range will be able to add not only to the gown – maybe a belt or a sash – but with her jewellery too. With the rich decoration that some collections this season enjoy, additional features would be overbearing, but here, a bride could only make herself look more beautiful with a pair of dangle earrings or a statement necklace.
