World Smile Day has been celebrated annually on the first Friday of every October since 1999. The day is officially sponsored by the World Smile Foundation, who aim to ‘improve the world, one smile at a time’. It is true, smiling can improve health, circumstance, happiness, relationships and of course, your special wedding day.

In fact, any special moment is marked by a smile: that affectionate look, that maternal bond, that funny memory. Pictures can preserve a smile, and looking at those pictures can bring it back.

Some of you won’t admit it… You think you look goofy when you smile, that you don’t like the colour of your teeth or the shape of your mouth. But it’s undeniable that everyone feels a little better when breaking into a grin.

On your wedding day, on your birthday, on World Smile Day, or on any day, you smile is your most powerful possession, and here’s why:

1. Smiling is contagious

Imagine yourself in a room of smiling, happy people, it would be almost impossible not to smile back, wouldn’t it? Studies suggest that seeing someone smile actually activates the part of your brain that controls your facial movement, leading you to return the grin. A smiling bride will make for smiling guests!

2. Smiling eases stress

They say a smile is the curve that puts everything straight. Smiling is linked to your emotions, and positive emotions counter-act stress. Smiling also releases endorphins.

3. Smiling makes you more attractive

Even if you don’t like your smile, a beaming display of happy emotion can add colour to your personality, which is an attractive trait. An average of 69% of people say that a smile is more attractive on a woman than make-up is. Time to look and feel your best on your special day!

4. Smiling is a natural instinct

Just like love, we aren’t taught how to smile. Scientists believe that a baby is born with the ability to smile, while most other abilities are gradually acquired.

6. Money Smiling is power

If words fail you, your smile can save the day in any situation. You can make an impression. You can cheer someone up. If you need a favour, smiling can help your case. So when it comes to planning your wedding, your smile will go a long way.

7. It makes you more approachable

No-one likes a bridezilla, so ease both your stress and the stress of others! Smiling will make for a more relaxed atmosphere surrounding the most important day of your life.

8. Your relationship will last longer

Smiling demonstrates understanding, affection and happiness. A healthy relationship is a happy relationship. Smile together, stay together!

When it comes to planning weddings, you may need a lot more than just a smile. But it’s a great place to start. On World Smile Day, its important to remember just how powerful a smile can be.

After all, it’s the smiles on yours, your family’s and your guest’s faces that make your big day feel all the more special.

Enjoy!
