 1. Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, Puglia

Let’s set this article off on the right foot, shall we? There are romantic restaurants and then there are romantic restaurants. And this one certainly falls into the latter category. Nestled in the comforting nook of a cave in Puglia, you and your significant other can dine to the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks quite literally below you. The atmosphere is lit by the natural reflection of the cerulean seawater and soft, romantic lighting. A truly magical and perfect place to get down on one knee as the sun sets in front of you.

2. Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a string of five beautiful and quaint little towns on the northwestern Italian coast. Each one contains colourful townhouses and vineyards that cling to the rugged cliff side, making this adorable little hideaway the perfect location for a dream proposal. With no car access, Vernazza remains one of the few “true fishing villages” left on the Italian Riviera, retaining its oldy-worldy charm and architectural charisma.

Why not enjoy a delicious, fresh dinner and watch the sun set over the sparkling waters at the Ristorante Belforte? Consider it dinner and one of nature’s most beautiful shows.

3. Grotta Azzurra, Campania (Capri)

Continuing on the cave theme, we have the Blue Cave or the “Grotta Azzura“, located on the beautiful island of Capri. Accessible by boat from Marina Grande, you have to lie back in a wooden rowboat in order to enter this spectacular cave, whose opening is less than a metre high. Once inside, look around at your enchanting surroundings, enjoy the feeling of your boat bobbing up and down on the artificially-blue-looking water and reach into your pocket for the ring…

6. San Galgano Abbey, Tuscany

There is something so magical about walking around a grandiose and robust yet partially-ruined building. The idea that a structure so powerful and awe-inspiring has experienced vulnerability and still remains somewhat intact. Use it as symbolism for your relationship, if you so wish! The Abbey of San Galgano is located a mere 35km south of Siena and is best reached by car. Why not wander around the ruins and soak in the historical richness, and then take your love to an enclave and change the course of their life forever…

7. Funicolare Brunate, Lake Como

I imagine that very few people can say that they’ve been proposed to on a funicular railway, so why not make your partner one of them?! This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the truly breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding Alps, and admire the beauty of the world around you. The railway, which was established in 1894 connects the dazzling city of Como (home to the ever-famous Lake Como) to Brunate in Lombardy, northwestern Italy. Ascend to lofty heights with your partner in tow and visit the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea (Church of St Andrew the Apostle) for some stunningly intricate frescoes and ultimate tranquility.

8. Fonte Gaia, Siena

For most people, the “fountain proposal” can’t be topped by the Trevi Fountain in Rome, or the Belaggio Fountain in Las Vegas, however, for people who want to escape the incredibly touristy vibe that comes with proposing in front of a famous fountain, Fonte Gaia is the answer to your prayers. A structurally-beautiful monument located in Siena, Tuscany, Fonte Gaia has all the aesthetics that come with the Trevi, such as the whitewashed stonework, the lovely blue water, the impressive intricacies in its design. But it is spared the obnoxious tourism so your proposal can be intimate and for your enjoyment only.
