Every year, couples from around the world choose to get married overlooking Italy’s beautiful Lake Como – where weddings are simply spectacular.
This 46km-long stretch of serene waters is situated in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, set against the foothills of the Alps. A dramatic landscape surrounded by picturesque fishing towns, Renaissance architecture in the city of Como, luxury resorts and boutique hotels. Imagine making your vows with this as your backdrop, as the sun sets on your lakeside ceremony.
If you’re already thinking of holding your dreamy destination wedding here, or you’ve not heard of Lake Como and want to find out more about getting married here, then read on for hotel, venue and wedding planner recommendations.
As with any marriage in Italy, you have to obtain a Nulla Osta (a legal document that the Italian Authorities require for the ceremony to take place). To do this, you need to get a Certificate of No Impediment at you local registry less than six months before the big event.
You don’t need a residency permit for a marriage in Italy, but since their ceremonies are legally binding, other documentation is required.
For a marriage in one of Lake Como’s enchanting Catholic churches, you will need proof of your single status, which are easy to obtain from a local solicitor. Civil ceremonies can take place almost anywhere, and are often officiated by the local Mayor.
Remember that these documents need to be translated. It is also protocol to have an interpreter at Italian weddings.
Where to stay
As already mentioned, there is a real plethora of lovely hotels surrounding Lake Como, each of them perfect for different wedding styles. Our favourite hotel at the moment, is none other than the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, which is sure to WOW you and your guests.
This luxury palatial hotel has over 100 years of history, with an authentic Art Nouveau air. It’s 5-star rooms boast some of the best views of Lake Como, and the unparalleled location is made even better with a swimming pool situated on the lake’s waters. The ethos here is to show guests the very best of traditional Italian hospitality, and so it’s the perfect place to kick start your romantic honeymoon after an incredible wedding.
Where to tie the knot
As well as hotel venues, Lake Como has some beautiful villas and churches for the ceremony. Villa Passalacqua really is a magical spot, overlooking the lake with beautiful historic gardens. The landscape gardens also double up as rooms with hedge walls, which make for the most exquisite wedding reception and party places.
You can also accommodate your guests at the property, since Villa Passalacqua has nine beautiful suites with bathrooms, all decorated with unique antiques and Venetian chandeliers. You’ll be able to offer your close friends and family an Italian experience that they will never forget!
