As many know, British weather is often unpredictable and wet. Here are our top tips on how to stop the rain dampening the mood of your big day!

Autumn weddings can be amongst the most romantic and special, but the one downside is that they can also be a little on the damp side too. Folklore says that a ‘wet’ wedding means a blessed marriage. So, just in case you find yourself facing a rainy wedding day, we’ve put together a few tips to make sure the wet weather doesn’t get in the way of your big day.

  1. Umbrella
  2. Sensible shoes
  3. Avoid having a really long train
  4. Waterproof makeup
  5. Warm clothing

1. Umbrella

When we say make sure you have an umbrella on you, we don’t mean any last minute grotty umbrella, we mean, plan in advance and get your hands on an umbrella that matches your dress. The best options include transparent umbrellas – so your guests can still see how beautiful you are regardless of what the weather is doing! – and umbrellas with floral patterns, which are very popular now. What better way to combat the wet than to blend perfectly with the theme for your wedding?

2. Sensible Shoes

This is key – you don’t want to be slipping and sliding around. You don’t need boots or anything too industrial, just go for something that isn’t open-toed, look for a non-slip heel and avoid spindly stilettos at all costs! Or if you’re completely set on wearing heels for your big day, have someone bring them to the venue for you so you can do a quick change before you walk down the aisle. The absolute worst thing you could do on your wedding day is fall – so make sure you have a back-up plan for footwear!

3. Avoid having a really long train

If you are one of those brides who has always dreamt of having a princess-style wedding dress complete with a gorgeous, long train then you must go for the type of dress that you’ve always wanted! If you’re a true princess-bride then make sure you charge someone with the responsibility of holding your train whenever you venture outside. However, if you’re not so fussed about having a certain style, then maybe pick something that has a manageable train. It can be difficult to predict exactly what the weather will be like on your wedding day – but if you’re getting married any time outside of May-August in the UK, then don’t take anything for granted!

4. Waterproof make-up

Ensuring you have waterproof makeup is something the most professional makeup artists will take into account if you are getting married during some of the rainier months. However, most of us don’t need a professional makeup artist to tell us this, so whatever makeup look you choose to go for, just make sure that it’s waterproof and British-weather-proof to avoid mascara running down your cheeks. Having a high-quality setting spray is the ideal option here, as they are tried and tested to prevent smears or stains.

5. Warm clothing

Rain isn’t the only thing you have to worry about. With rain often comes the cold. It’s your wedding day and you want to look good, but it’s also very important that you feel comfortable, so make sure you give your clothes some thought before the big day. Make sure you pick something that goes with your dress and that is flattering. Think cotton poncho, a linen coat or perhaps amp up the glam and go for a fur stole!

Regardless of the weather, it’s your wedding, of course you are going to have a wonderful day regardless of what the weather decides to do, but make sure you’re prepared either way!
