Martin and Susan have six children. They’re a pretty big family and wanted to honour it by getting married. It was love that first brought the couple together and that made them want to celebrate their love by having children. How they met
Martin and I first met each other during a dinner party organised by a friend of Martin’s parents. After that night we both knew there was something between us. I just knew it, as soon as I entered the room and saw Martin there, smiling. We discovered that evening that we had both been to lots of the same places and could have crossed paths many times before which made me even more certain that our first meeting meant something.
For example, Martin grew up where my mother was born in England. I had lived in Oxford once upon a time where his parents now live. We also discovered that we had both been living in Sydney at the same time but ended up meeting in Adelaide!
How he asked her to marry him
The way Martin asked me to marry him was just perfect. We were on one of our favourite walks in the hills in Adelaide when he suddenly got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! He had bought a beautiful ring and it was just before Christmas – the whole occasion was just magical!
The preparations
When planning our wedding we were really keen to involve our kids as much as possible – we aren’t just a couple, we’re a family! We decided to get married in the South of France and started looking for a house that would be able to accommodate all of us and guests. We ended up choosing somewhere not too far from Octon, where Martin’s parents have a house. Le Château de Roquelune à Pézenas was the perfect place for us!
There were times when it was a little stressful planning a wedding in France all the way from Australia so we chose to call in the professionals and hired the wonderful Virginie from the agency ‘Mariella’. We had plenty of chats and meetings over Skype and made one trip to the Chateau to see what it was like in real life, as well as to taste the menu and meet with our florist and photographer. One of the most enjoyable parts of the preparation was choreographing a dance for all eight of us to open the dancing after dinner. It was a bit stressful at times but it was totally worth all the hard work when we performed it on the night.
The big day
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day – it really did feel like a fairy-tale. It was everything we imagined and more! One of the things that will stick in my mind are the beautiful table decorations and lanterns which created the perfect romantic atmosphere. We had wonderful weather too. It was sunny and still so just perfect for a wedding.
