Getting married abroad survey

Online independent travel agent Sunshine.co.uk has released the results of its survey that asked unmarried couples where they wanted to get married and what would be the most desirable destination for a foreign wedding.

After asking 1,682 unmarried couples where they’d like to get married, online travel agent www.sunshine.co.uk found that 61% of respondents wanted to get married abroad.

Nineteen per cent of these claimed it was because it was a  ‘wedding and honeymoon in one’, whilst 77% were attracted by the ‘warm weather’.

32% of those that wanted to marry abroad thought it was ‘less hassle’ and 81% said the UK was ‘too expensive’ for weddings.

And what about those of your who didn’t want to get married abroad? 46% believed it to be ‘unfair’ on family and friends that may not be able to make the event. 12% said it was ‘too hot’ abroad.

The survey also looked into the most popular destinations abroad for weddings, asking the 61% of unwed couples who did want to get married abroad, where they would want to do so.

The survey found that the top ten favourite destinations for a wedding abroad are:

1.    Cyprus                       71%

2.    Hawaii                        68%

3.    Barbados                   65%

4.    Las Vegas                 53%

5.    Mauritius                   51%

6.    Maldives                    49%

7.    Mexico                       44%

8.    Sicily                          42%

9.    Sri Lanka                  39%

10. Florida                        28%

However, while wishing is one thing, doing is another. Although 61% said the wanted to get married abroad, only 13% said they ‘definitely’ were. 27% of the couples wanting to tie the knot abroad said they would quite like a honeymoon in another destination too.

Chris Brown, travel expert and co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said of the survey, “Weddings abroad are becoming more and more popular and we quite often have enquiries from customers looking into get married overseas, or people looking for deals for holidays where friends or relatives are tying the knot.”
