Going away after getting married is the perfect opportunity to reward yourself for all the hard work you put into planning your big day. While many couples go for the more traditional option of a relaxing few weeks spent lounging on a white, sandy beach, topping up their tan and sipping on unlimited piña coladas, other couples look for something a bit out of the ordinary – a less conventional holiday to kick-start married life together. Today we are showing you a list of 5 of the most weird and wonderful places in the world to spend your honeymoon. Stay tuned!
1. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland
This resort is an incredibly popular honeymoon destination for outdoorsy couples who enjoy colder climates and being exposed to the best that nature has to offer. Famous for its outdoor glass igloos, allowing you to observe the skies (and if you’re lucky during autumn, the Northern Lights) Kakslauttanen is located just 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding area is so clean and the water running through it is so pure that you can drink straight from the streams or lakes nearby. As a honeymooning couple, you can choose to stay in an igloo, an earth lodge or the Queen Suite. Good luck choosing your favourite!
2. Hotel de Glace, Canada
This idyllic ice hotel is a must for couples who want to experience an innovative and unique hotel experience. Hotel de Glace is located some 5 kilometres from Quebec City in the Laurentian Mountains. As it is reconstructed every December and then opened in early January, the hotel is different every year – making it a truly one-of-a-kind place to stay for your honeymoon. All furniture is made of ice, and each suite has a double bed complete with insulating bed sheets for optimum comfort. It has only a 3-month lifespan so make sure to book in with them before April!
3. Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses, New Zealand
Those of us who built tree houses as kids will have fond memories of spending hours on end enjoying the tranquility of being away from ground level. There is something so powerful yet humbling about being able to see things from above. Hapuku Lodge is the perfect location for couples who want to recreate those feelings from childhood, whilst enjoying high quality comforts. The resort possesses 5 tree houses, each 100 metres above ground with large windows for optimum views of the canopy, the mountains in Kaikoura and the Pacific Ocean.
4. Faralda Crane Hotel, The Netherlands
Sleeping in a crane is probably not something that springs to most people’s minds when thinking about where to spend your honeymoon, however, thanks to the Faralda Crane Hotel, this is entirely possible. This new and modern hotel stands at 50 metres tall and consists of 3 of the most luxurious suites in Northern Amsterdam. It was bought in 1951 and remained unused for 30 years before being converted into a hotel that allows you to spend your honeymoon at dizzying heights overlooking the city. Each suite has its own theme, so you can choose the one that best suits you and your partner.
5. Dog Bark Park Inn, Idaho
This might be the only time you’ll welcome being in the doghouse with your partner! Dog Bark Park Inn is the world’s biggest beagle ready to accommodate any newlywed dog lovers looking for a hotel that’ll definitely stand out in photographs! The lodging offers an extensive continental breakfast that you can help yourself to, and it comes with amenities such as a full bath, air conditioning, hairdryer and wifi. All interior decoration is dog-themed and, with prior approval, you are welcome to bring your own pet (as long as they are well-behaved, of course!) The beagle sleeps up to 4 people and as there is only one lodging, you are guaranteed to be the centre of attention on your honeymoon.
