The gorgeous gowns took center stage on the runways at NYC’s Bridal Fashion Week, setting the upcoming trends for bridal style. But the runways also served up a huge dose of bridal beauty, marking trends for wedding hairstyles in the coming year. Besides ogling all the designer wedding dresses, there’s tons of style inspiration you can borrow from the bridal runways when considering how to style your hair for your wedding. The biggest trends we saw were vintage-inspired styles, high-volume updos, twisted and braided buns, sleek side-chignons and relaxed, romantic looks.

Vintage-Inspired Styles

Timeless and romantic vintage styles will always be popular in the bridal world and just as we predicted an influence from the 1920s, 30s and 40s as a big wedding dress trend for 2013, these retro-inspired hair-dos pair perfectly with the Golden Age of old Hollywood glamour. Both Kenneth Pool and Mark Zunino styled their models with deep side parts and glamorous waves. These hairstyles are similar to what we saw on Mila Jovavich and January Jones on the red carpet at the Oscars.

Va-Va Volume

Probably the most popular “fancy” hairstyle, sky-high updos were bigger than ever for Spring 2013. While Dennis Basso sent his models down the catwalk in sleek, high ponytails, the girls at Christos were teased into modern beehives with thin headbands. We spotted other high styles at Rivini and Ines Di Santo. Heavily teased crowns paired with softly curled side ponytails and crystal headbands (we noticed headbands were the bridal hair accessory for Spring 2013) are what we saw from Sarah Seven.

Beautiful Buns

We’re seeing highly detailed variations of the bun as a big trend for bridal hair. A simple ballerina bun will always be a classic look, but buns created from a bunch of individual twists and intricate braids are the trend for this sophisticated ‘do. Badgley Mischka paired a center part that twisted behind the ear into a low, knotted bun while Judd Waddell showed us a simple, yet elegant braided bun.

Side Chignons

Another classic and popular bridal hairstyle, the side chignon was the only hairstyle the models sported on the runways at Amsale. Paired with a deep side part, it’s the perfect combination of sleek, yet messy and casual style. Jenny Packham’s side chignon was vintage-inspired, super romantic and incorporated loose braiding.

Relaxed and Romantic

Who says bridal hairstyles have to be perfectly combed and coiffed? Try pairing your glamorous gown with an “undone,” no-fuss style a la Vera Wang. Similar to the hairstyles in her last collection, Vera’s models rocked shaggy short cuts and messy, piecey pigtails. The girls at Anna Maier/Ulla-Maija and Monique Lhuillier had their hair pulled away from their face while looking a little windblown, even with a few flyaways!
